Indexing Valve
One of the most convenient and easiest methods for automatic irrigation involves the use of indexing valves. An index valve has 1 water inlet port (1" for city water, 1-1/4" & 1-1/2" for pumps)and several outlet ports depending on the number of zones and is available from 2 to 6 zones.
The index valve becomes the sprinkler manifold, which eliminates the need for a series of individual electric anti-siphon or solenoid valves. Indexing valves are very practical and easy to install (above ground) and operate by allowing water to flow our of only one outlet port at a time. Once the water supply turns off, the valve then advances to the next sequential port, therefore, it is necessary to have a means of shutting the water off so the disk inside the valve can rotate to the next zone. This can be done with an electric solenoid valve, a manual valve or by turning a pump on and off.
